NAME: Zed O'Brien
CANON: Blood Blockade Battlefront
CANON POINT: Manga s2ch18 (with anime-only plot continuum knowledge) >>> updated to s2ch22
AGE: Physically & mentally in 20s, actually 13
BACKGROUND: http://kekkai-sensen.wikia.com/wiki/Zed_O'Brien
PERSONALITY:
"Zed O'Brien-- he defeats his enemies with his crimson spear. Calmly, serenely, and reliably...!"
To understand Zed better, let’s first examine his master: “Blood Battle God”, founder of the Big-Dipper Blood Technique, Master Raju Juge Shizuyoshi. He’s described as elusive, obsessed with honing his skills, and he puts his disciples through training regimens equivalent to severe mental and physical torture. As his junior disciple, Zed is a resilient individual who adapts to most situations with ease. Even with his guard down, Zed can react in a split second if danger strikes, and he prioritizes others’ safety first even if the altruistic act puts himself in danger. He wouldn't call himself a hero; he simply helps where he can.
Between his friends, Zed is the straight-laced one of the group. The fishman is a foil to his fiery senior, Zapp: cool and composed like the wind element he's mastered, always polite, a bit quiet, and likely to have his head in a book. And although Zapp and Zed are friends (even if both would never admit it), their personalities clash, creating a sort of competitive rivalry that brings out Zed’s sassy side. When Leo invites the merman out to lunch, Zapp decides lead them to a sushi restaurant in an attempt to haze Zed. To both Zapp and Leo’s surprise, Zed is all for eating there. When asked if it was cannibalism, he quickly responds:
While Zed and Zapp bump heads, Leo is the one to pull Zed out of his reclusive shell since he was the first in Libra to approach him as a friend. Zed was initially surprised because he would have been content with burying himself in books instead of getting to know the other members. Before Libra, the fishman's contact with people were limited to his creator and Master Raju. Essentially, he was used to being alone and didn’t know what it was like otherwise.
Despite his upbringing, Zed doesn't lack social skills and is well-adjusted to handling society even if it's as crazy as Hellsalem's Lot. He was raised on conversations about various arts and studies, such as poetry, music, astronomy, and philosophy. The merman has continued those intellectual pursuits, learning as much as he can about the world he has been deprived of. Also, Zed's tolerance for dealing with his friends' shenanigans and stupidity could almost be considered saintly. Of course there are times when he gets irked too! Yet he's the kind of person who doesn't react to strong emotions immediately:
"Just about everyone has their circumstances. So as long as I can discern what those are, there's no reason for me to get recklessly irritated." However, as cool-headed as he is, there are limits on Zed's patience. In s2ch11, "Angry Young Merman", Zed is pointedly faced with the city's prejudice towards a single-father and his daughter because his affliction with an infectious jellyfish disease. Sergei, the father, talks about the discrimination him and Ellen face, to which Zed responds with shock. Zed also identifies with the isolation Sergei describes but is able to reflect upon his relationships with his creator, Master Raju, and all his friends and colleagues in Libra: "...I think I understand how it feels to be lonely. I was born as a synthetic lifeform. I don't have any parents, nor do I have any children. I don't even conform to the laws of nature. I don't have a single relative. [...] Um, but anyways, I've accepted all of that. When you don't have anything from the start, there's nothing to be afraid of. All you can do is gain."
The family's incidental involvement in Zed & Zapp's undercover investigation of a lethal drug leads to an explosive outburst from Zed when he reaches his limit. Zed witnesses Ellen taking the drug and is deeply affected by her words when she tells him that people are just pretending to be decent, unaware of how much she and Sergei have suffered, and that she wishes she'd never been born. Zed later learns the purpose of the drug while meeting with the dealer: to kill users because they have no value in society. Enraged but still somehow able to keep his cool, Zed excuses himself, only to be harassed by a bodyguard that assumes Zed had slept with Ellen after seeing them together. Zed finally snaps when the guy talks shit about Ellen, makes fun of Zed's fishman nature, and tries to manhandle Zed as he attempts to walk away.
All-in-all, Zed is a quiet, levelheaded individual. He cares for others but sometimes struggles with the inherent loneliness of being the only one of his kind. The nerdy fishman is generally a good guy who can adapt to whatever cards he is dealt.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
+Increased endurance, strength, and regeneration.
+Big Dipper Blood Battle Style: Able to manipulate his blood into different forms such as tridents, twin blades, and extremely durable thread. Can also create a bubble-like barrier around his head with his blood to hold water in case he loses his breathing apparatus. Like other members of Libra who use their blood for fighting, Zed's blood has the ability to hinder others' regenerative abilities.
+Goddess of Winds Elemental Branch: Able to manipulate air freely and used to enhance the power and reach of his blood technique. Can form wind vortexes and giant tornadoes to either attack with, defend, or capture enemies.
+Although he is a fish-human chimera, Zed has a fish respiratory system and cannot breathe air directly without water. The type of water does not seem to matter, and he seems to be able to survive without water for an extended period of time (albeit with complete loss of consciousness).
INVENTORY: His B2B outfit which includes his air-gills breathing apparatus.
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis

When asked if it was cannibalism, he quickly responds:
“And just what do you think fish that live in the sea typically consume? Other creatures that live in the sea. It is obvious that your impertinent, philistine insults arise from your ignorance. As soon as you’re done processing what I’ve said, we can go inside.”In summary: ‘shut up, you uncultured swine’. Zed doesn’t hold back when it comes to calling out someone’s antics and returning fire. For the next restaurant that Zapp picks, they watch the head chef through the front window vomiting into a bowl before welcoming them in. “I see. How novel! Let’s try this,” to which Leo begs the fishman not to pick the restaurant. Despite going elsewhere, it shows that Zed is open to weird and new experiences…or was trying to show one up on Zapp again.
While Zed and Zapp bump heads, Leo is the one to pull Zed out of his reclusive shell since he was the first in Libra to approach him as a friend. "I'm fed up with listening to you talk about winners and losers and lives with or without worth. Accepting such talk would be the same as dying of suffocation."Zed proceeds into a rage and destroys the building with the drug dealers inside it. The story ends with Leo stating that he's glad to see that Zed has "such a side to him" followed by a chapter end commentary: "He harbors a quiet but intense determination".
